UK’s Largest Cable Operator and Leading Provider of Triple-Play Services Chooses Brix System To Verify Performance Of Its Next-Generation, IP Services Foundation

CHICAGO, Ill. – GLOBALCOMM 2006 — Brix Networks, the leading provider of the most widely deployed converged service assurance solutions, today announced that ntl:Telewest (NASDAQ: NTLI), the United Kingdom’s largest cable operator and a leading supplier of broadband, digital television, telephony, content, and communications services to homes, businesses, and public sector organizations, has selected the Brix System to monitor the quality of ntl:Telewest’s Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) core network.

This announcement was made on the opening day of GLOBALCOMM 2006 being held here at McCormick Place, June 5-7, where Brix is exhibiting in the IP Video Pavilion in booth 63091.

Deployed by many telcos and service providers, MPLS can deliver the quality of service (QoS) required to support delay-sensitive services over a data network, such as real-time voice and video, as well as service level agreements (SLAs) that guarantee bandwidth. MPLS unites routing and switching and provides a high-speed switched connection for IP traffic aggregated at a service provider’s point-of-presence.

ntl:Telewest offers a triple-play bundle of broadband Internet, digital TV, and telephone services to more than 12 million homes across the UK. As the company built its Broadnet MPLS core network, it established it as the foundation for its next-generation, IP-based services, including the recently rolled out Metnet managed Ethernet service. To enable ntl:Telewest to continue successful deployments of quality IP services and applications, service assurance throughout its MPLS core became essential.

“Brix Networks has a deep understanding and expertise in IP services and MPLS infrastructure, and offers us a highly integrated solution that includes automated collection of real-time data, active testing, passive monitoring, and critical service-quality reporting metrics,” said Derek Cobb, director of network architecture, ntl:Telewest. “Brix solutions give us the visibility we need to migrate from our legacy infrastructure to a flexible, MPLS-based architecture that lets us quickly roll out quality IP service offerings and develop proactive tools to help ensure our customers the highest quality of experience.”

In demonstrating rapid service creation, end-to-end protection, robust SLAs, and support for voice, Internet, and multicast traffic, ntl:Telewest recently became the first European service provider to receive certification for its National Ethernet service from the Metro Ethernet Forum.

“As new IP- and IMS-based offerings are increasingly rolled out over service-enabling MPLS core networks, providers need greater visibility into service quality parameters in order to optimize their networks to meet the unique resource requirements of each class of service,” said Tom Pincince, president and CEO of Brix Networks. “To establish an advantage based on quality and not price alone, providers have to ensure they are meeting their customers’ SLAs, while cost-effectively utilizing the existing investments they have already made in their networks.”

Brix Networks’ seamlessly integrated hardware and software products -- collectively called the Brix System -- are strategic service assurance solutions that proactively monitor IP service and application quality. Network operators use the Brix System to guarantee the successful launch and ongoing, profitable operation of their various IP services, including VoIP, IPTV, and VPNs.
