Developing Crime Reduction Strategy with LEGO®

WEBWIRE

On October 4, 2011, multi-stakeholder groups from a variety of organizations within the City of Surrey met at the Surrey Arts Centre.  They took part in a day-long problem solving Strategicplay® event.  The Strategicplay® facilitators used LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ methods and Gamestorming tools in order to facilitate a conversation about a complex and important topic—The City of Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategy. Participants engaged their hands and minds as they explored this challenging topic through hard fun.

“This is an excellent example of how a large group of people from a multitude of backgrounds and a range of experiences can work so well together. The energy level was high right until the end of the day, when the final bricks in the large LEGO® System was complete and the story was told. Everyone’s voice was heard as the information was gathered for examination and new goals were developed,” said Jacquie Lloyd Smith, one of the StrategicPlay® facilitators.

Participants used more than 20,000 LEGO® bricks to create a large model measuring 8 by 8 feet and 10 inches high. The individuals gained a new awareness of the current situation and created many new ideas to move the City of Surrey’s Crime Reduction Strategic Plan forward. Cllr. Rasode, City of Surrey, said, “Judging from an initial review of the feedback, and our observations, it was a unique and productive day.  We truly appreciate the energy, time, and input everyone contributed towards the initiative.”
