Carrier to Benefit from Cisco Optical and IP Next- Generation Networking Solutions

TAIPEI, Taiwan, - Cisco Systems® today announced that the international business arm of Taiwan’s largest telecommunications company, Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), has selected a Cisco optical networking solution, using the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP), to help propel its rapid expansion into overseas markets in Asia, Europe and the United States. CHT also expects the Cisco optical networking solution to enhance end-to-end management of its customers’ networks and improve services to the increasing number of Taiwanese service providers (SPs) and enterprises with global operations.

CHT has extended its coverage from six to 12 cities in Asia, Europe and the United States after the deployment of the Cisco optical networking solution. As a result, the telco can provide service providers and enterprises with the bandwidth they require in different overseas markets for effective communications now and in the future.

The current project is part of CHT’s initiative to embrace a Cisco Internet Protocol (IP) Next-Generation Network (NGN) infrastructure. CHT will continue to rely on the IP NGN infrastructure as it ventures into more foreign markets in the future.

Cisco optical networking products and services are a key component of the Cisco’s IP NGN, an architecture that enables service providers - such as CHT - to migrate to and deliver services to IP-based networks. By adopting Cisco IP NGN, SPs can deliver new and innovative services to their customers with greater velocity. Also, SPs can improve their operational and capital expenditure efficiencies while advancing the network technology and service control that they and their customers need for long-term business success.

“Competition in Taiwan’s telecom market has been increasingly intense after liberalization, and it is important for Chunghwa Telecom to expedite its expansion into overseas markets. We are a long-time user of Cisco solutions, which has given us an unparalleled edge in growing our business,” said Mr. Lin Jen Hon, president of International Business Group Chunghwa Telecom. “Cisco’s optical networking solution is high-performance, cost-effective and easy to manage. It will further help us maintain our leading status not only in Taiwan but also in overseas markets by providing better services to Taiwanese companies having offices in foreign countries.”

“Cisco is delighted to work with Taiwan’s largest and most experienced telco in enhancing its services and expanding its footprint internationally,” said Mr. C.H. Wu, country manager of Cisco Taiwan. “With the greatest coverage worldwide in the networking industry, Cisco also has an in-depth understanding of different geographies and customer needs in diverse markets. Our robust technologies together with our unequaled global presence and local market knowledge will certainly bring benefits to CHT’s expansion.”

The solution comprises the Cisco ONS 15454 MSPP, Cisco 12000 Series Routers, Cisco 7600 Series Routers and Cisco Transport Manager.

The Cisco ONS 15454 MSPP provides the functions of many traditional Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) network elements in a single platform, combining advanced SONET/SDH transport through OC-192/STM-64 integrated dense wavelength-division multiplexing optical networking and multi-service interfaces. The Cisco ONS 15454 MSPP combines the capacity of advanced optical transport with the intelligence of IP to cost-effectively deliver voice and data services.

The Cisco 12000 Series is a portfolio of intelligent routers that scale from 2.5- to n x 10-Gbps capacity per slot, enabling carrier-class IP/Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks and accelerating the evolution to IP NGNs. Built to protect investments, this portfolio delivers up to 1.28-terabits-per-second switching capacity with wire-speed feature performance, scalability and simple hardware and software upgrade paths.

The Cisco 7600 Series Routers deliver high-performance wide- and metropolitan-area network (WAN and MAN) capabilities with high-touch IP services at the network edge. Now, service providers and enterprises can enable new services at optical speeds, providing competitive advantage and service differentiation to the service provider and high-speed connectivity and link usage efficiency to the enterprise. The Cisco 7600 Series helps SPs break through service and bandwidth barriers to provide their customers with new and better products and services.

The Cisco Transport Manager is the industry’s most advanced optical transport domain manager. It delivers the full power of the Cisco ONS 15000 Series, Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System and the Cisco MGX® Voice Gateway products to the operations personnel and back-office systems of today’s customers. Using its network provisioning, network oversight and management, and performance monitoring features, customers can more rapidly roll out and maintain revenue-generating services that are built on Cisco optical networking, carrier routing and voice gateway systems.

The Cisco solution helps CHT build a single multi-service platform that allows strong support for a range of international solutions and services. Importantly, easy point-and-click provisioning enables the Cisco solution to provide simple, cost-effective network and customer management from one centralized location.

CHT also benefits from Cisco’s globally available support, helping to ensure unparalleled reliability of service to the telco’s customers worldwide. All of this can be translated into faster time to market and revenue growth opportunities.

“The Cisco IP NGN is an important strategy for service providers to maintain their edge as well as venture into new markets and roll out new services. Cisco is pleased to help CHT build an IP NGN-based infrastructure that helps it to establish a foothold everywhere it goes,” concluded Mr. Wu.
