Developer Admits Improper Removal of Asbestos, Violation of Clean Air Act

 Anthony Crompton, the developer in charge of the Citadel Plaza Redevelopment project in Kansas City, pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Air Act on Wednesday. During the demolition process, he improperly removed asbestos-containing materials from numerous houses as he made way for the $85 million retail center.
 
Crompton faces up to five years in prison without parole and a $250,000 fine.
 
A spokesman for Kansas City mayor Sly James said that the state would require a cleanup of the site, if the development goes forward. He also noted that the air does not presently show dangerous levels of asbestos, but the release of asbestos when the ground is disturbed could pose a public health threat in the future.
