Keeping the Component Process Clean and Green at Bigelow Components Corporation

WEBWIRE

Brett Harman, president of Bigelow Components Corporation, explains, “It’s the smartest, most responsible way to conduct business. Many of our clients have their own corporate sustainability initiatives and we view ourselves as a partner in helping them meet and exceed those objectives.” In meeting this goal, Bigelow is continually focused on sourcing and implementing the most efficient and effective ways to produce the highest quality components with the least environmental impact possible.

And for the people of Bigelow, the motives are also personal. As Harman further explains, “Many of us are avid outdoorsmen and women. We fish, we camp, and we hike. We love and respect everything about nature. So, in order to enjoy what we love and to protect it for our children and grandchildren – as well as those of our customers – we do everything we can to keep the land, air and water clean for future generations.

Maximum quality with minimum waste.

As proof of the company’s dedication, Harman proudly points to the fact that of the many tons of copper Bigelow uses each year, less than one-quarter of a pound leaves their doors in the form of waste. The company scrupulously recaptures metals like nickel and copper in solid form, limiting waste to a mere trace amount. Bigelow also utilizes dedicated systems that allow it to recapture metals even after they have dissolved.

Solvents are an important part of cold-headed and stamped components manufacturing. As Harman points out, there are wise ecological choices that can be made here as well: “Years ago, we made an important decision to switch to B-28 oil – a light oil with a higher flashpoint. It proved to be every bit as effective as the solvent we had been using, and more ecologically sound. Better performance and better for the environment.” Certainly a “win-win” situation.

Bigelow’s successful programs are the result of many years of ongoing development as Bigelow continues to look for ways to further reduce the amount of waste metals that leaves its facility during processing.

Making the grade.

Bigelow’s overall commitment to quality and to the environment results in specialized training for its employees that not only yields outstanding components for its clients, but also results in a superior environmental and workplace safety record. In addition to being in compliance with the highest “green” standards, Bigelow has received excellent report cards from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Rahway Valley Sewage Authority.

Harman sums it up, “The way we see it, achieving these high environmental standards are just as important as maintaining our high customer service and production standards.”
