Siam Commercial Bank Selects Teradata for its Enterprise Data Warehouse

Improved business intelligence will help increase bank’s local and global competitiveness

BANGKOK, Thailand - Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), today announced that Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), one of Thailand’s one of Thailand’s largest banks (largest in terms of market capitalization; third-largest measured by asset size) with more than 710 branches and nearly 3,000 automated teller machines nationwide, has selected the Teradata® Warehouse as the platform for its enterprise data warehouse (EDW) project.

The comprehensive EDW solution includes Teradata’s hardware, software and professional services, customized to integrate and support the complex analytic applications for data across SCB’s various business units. SCB sees significant growth opportunities in Thailand’s banking industry, and believes the Teradata EDW solution will help bolster its competitiveness in both the local and international environments.

The first phase of the implementation will involve the extraction and transfer of all critical data and information currently stored in legacy systems across SCB’s various business units. This data will then be consolidated within the centralized Teradata EDW platform, where it will present a single, holistic view of SCB’s entire business.

SCB previously deployed a data warehouse running primarily on its IBM mainframe computing environment along with several disparate data marts. This system served the bank’s various business units as a decentralized, “hub-and-spoke architecture.” This architecture ultimately represented a higher total cost of maintenance and ownership, and resulted in certain performance and scalability limitations. Finally, because the data also varied among data marts across the bank, consistency problems were created for business users who were unable to get a single view of the business.

According to Jason Shipman, general manager of Teradata in Thailand, “The Teradata solution will integrate data across SCB’s businesses, delivering consistency and efficiency, and giving decision-makers a clear and strategic view of the entire business. SCB will have the ability to make collective, fact-based decisions based on data from key performance indicators contributing to the underlying strategies of the bank.

“The Teradata EDW solution will increasingly support functions as diverse as personalized customer relationship management and marketing programs, credit risk management strategies and financial analysis and reporting, as well as improved operational efficiencies that will result in helping reduce operating costs,” added Shipman.
