3 Months Ahead of Schedule: City of Mannheim Migrates 4,000 Users to Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010

The City of Mannheim has one year to migrate 4,000 users from Microsoft Windows XP to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2003 to Office 2010. Today, 3 months ahead of schedule, the IT department has already migrated 80% of their users in their 300 diverse locations without any major disruptions to the functions of the City, and without the anticipated spike in help desk calls. To ensure a successful rollout, and in order to use as many features of the new software as possible, the City of Mannheim provided their staff with support via the Instant Learning Server® –a video-based, instant-learning application for workplace support in Microsoft Office 2010.

Workplace Training and Support

Because of its high cost and impending absences, the city had decided against traditional instructor-led or virtual classroom training of their 4,000 employees. However, the learning solution had to be effective, sustainable and intuitive.“ SONIC’s concept of learning by video convinced us that it was the right tool to use”, said Armbruster. “I’ve observed this particularly among my younger colleagues: they no longer read manuals, but delve into Internet videos when they want to know how something works.” As things progress, the City also plans to add their own video recordings to the platform, and to make instructional videos about their other software applications searchable in the learning platform.
