In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes ethylene thiourea (ETU), a major degradation product of widely used ethylenebisdithiocarbamate (EBDC) fungicides.  It is also used in the rubber manufacturing industry.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified ethylene thiourea as a Group B2, probable human carcinogen.  The chemical is highly soluble in water and is typically found in a white to pale green crystal form.

“Exposure to ethylene thiourea can impact the eyes, skin, thyroid and reproductive systems according to scientific literature,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, a leading environmental testing laboratory.   “The routes of human exposure to ethylene thiourea include inhalation, ingestion and dermal exposure.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found the chemical in 27 different food products in everything from spinach to apples.  In addition to being found on food products, it can also be detected in environmental samples and in work environments where the chemical is used.  Testing for ethylene thiourea can help prevent human exposures to this potentially dangerous chemical,” he continued.

LA Testing provides testing services for ethylene thiourea on foods, in the workplace and from environmental samples.  To learn more about Proposition 65 testing services please visit www.LATesting.com, email info@LATesting.com or call (800) 755-1794.
