Clinical Negligence Alert - Dr Deepak Kumar Chitkara

Dr Chitkara was suspended by The General Medical Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee on 5th May 2006 for 1 year.

Dr Chitkara operated at the Rosen Eye Clinic in Salford Quays, Manchester and since August 2004 operated from a rival clinic at Pomona Docks, also in Manchester.

Patients complained that he had implanted untried and untested lenses as part of a study and later signed a lucrative contract with the manufacturers of the lens. Five main areas of misconduct were alleged against him including a failure to make himself available to deal with post-operative complications which arose and making exaggerated claims in a brochure as to his role in the development of various surgical techniques.

Dr Chitkara admitted the majority of the counts of misconduct levied against him and all, whether admitted or not, were found proved except for one allegation of presenting misleading data to a Conference.
