New Toyota Afforestation Project Announced in China

WEBWIRE

Toyota City, Japan - Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that its Chinese subsidiary Toyota Motor (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (TMCI) held a signing ceremony on August 26 marking its agreement to carry out the Toyota Green Greater Beijing Economic Zone Fengning Afforestation Project. The afforestation project is to be carried out over three years, starting in 2011, by TMCI in collaboration with the Hebei Province Forestry Bureau and the Fengning Manchu Autonomous County Forestry Bureau.

Representatives from Hebei provincial government, the Hebei Province Forestry Bureau, Fengning Manchu Autonomous County Forestry Bureau, and TMC attended the ceremony. Volunteers from TMCI, other Toyota affiliates and offices in China also attended and carried out tree-planting activities.

The aim of the project is to plant trees in a 150-hectare area over three years in the Nanshakouzi region in the northern part of Hebei Province (including Fengning County). This area serves as a water source for Beijing and Tianjin, but is experiencing particularly severe desertification that has caused sandstorms affecting those two cities. The project also seeks to encourage the development of greening activities that establish economic independence for local residents via earnings from the afforested areas. This aim is identical to that of the 10-year project in Xiaobazi Township that began in 2001.

Toyota is committed to carrying out its social contribution activities, with a focus on environmental protection, human-resource development and traffic safety, and is continuing to engage in these social contribution activities as part of its efforts to actively contribute to Chinese society as a good corporate citizen.

TMC carried out the joint Sino-Japanese 21st Century Greater Beijing Reforestation Model project in collaboration with the China-Japan Scientific Technology & Economic Exchange Association of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Hebei Province Forestry Bureau, and the Green Earth Center nonprofit organization over 10 years, starting in 2001. Some 3.9 million trees were planted on roughly 3,000 hectares to prevent desertification and restore greenery in Xiaobazi Township, Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, Hebei Province. In addition to providing 450 million yen of funding as part of this project, TMC also dispatched technical experts to China. The project continued to encourage the development of sustainable greening activities with the aim of establishing economic independence for local residents via the earnings from these afforested areas. The 21st Century Greater Beijing Afforestation Center was established to carry out sustainable greening activities and to help create a system and personnel base for those. Up until now, more than 7,900 people including forest technicians, local residents and children have studied at this center.
