Minister Frattini holds conference call with counterparts of the Libyan Contact Group

Minister Frattini exchanged opinions in light of the recent events in Tripoli in a conference call with counterparts of the Libyan Contact Group.

Support for the NTC was confirmed and the need to maintain pressure on Col. Gaddafi to cease all resistance and halt further violence and bloodshed.

It was agreed that the international community would work closely over the coming days with the NTC on arranging humanitarian support, institutional reconstruction and economic support. Minister Frattini highlighted the importance of meeting with the civil society, once the situation on the ground permits, in order to better understand what initiatives to undertake in the coming months.

The ministers also decided that the Political Directors of the Contact Group members would meet in Istanbul on 25 August to analyse where to intervene in crucial sectors such as security and public order, institution building, energy, communications and border controls.
