Rottenstein Law Group Approves of Facebook Decision to Revoke Special Privileges from Drug Companies

WEBWIRE

(New York, NY, August 22, 2011) The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from the severe side effects of various prescription drugs, applauds the decision of Facebook that drug companies do not merit special treatment on the social networking site.

In an article at DailyTech.com, Facebook has reversed an earlier decision to exempt the pages of pharmaceutical companies from public comments. Now those pages will be open to comments from users, as are all public pages on the site. This decision is prompting some pharmaceutical companies to take down their Facebook pages.

According to the article: “It took years for the pharmaceutical companies to create Facebook pages because they feared users could write negative statements about their products all over their page Walls. Also, these companies were worried that users could write about bad side effects and encourage/advertise off-label use. Facebook finally gave them the exclusive ability to block public comments on their page Walls.”

Now, Facebook has decided to disallow the blocking of public comments, and the drug companies are “not happy about it.” Facebook has said that it would allow some companies to retain their comment-blocking privileges, but most will lose them. The companies that will see comments enabled are those focused on the company itself or “patient-specific communities.”

“Companies who don’t delete their Facebook [pages] worry that they’ll have to use additional resources to monitor their page Walls on a daily basis,” the article explained. “The reason for constant monitoring is their fear of adverse event reports (AERs), which would be a result of a user posting about a negative reaction to a certain company medication, and the information potentially qualifying as an AER. This must then be filed with the Food and Drug Administration, which will lead to re-evaluation of the product’s safety.”

The Rottenstein Law Group maintains a Web site to provide comprehensive information to the public about specific dangerous drugs and defective medical products. Those who wish to learn about harmful medications and faulty medical devices will be able to find relevant information at the site, which is updated regularly as new information becomes available.
