TestAmerica Speaks on New EPA Method Development for Analysis of Flue Gas Desulfurization Wastewaters

WEBWIRE

Dr. Richard Burrows, TestAmerica’s Director of Technical Services, nationally recognized for his technical and regulatory expertise, will present on the development of an EPA method for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) wastewater analysis. The presentation will be given at the annual 2011 National Environmental Monitoring Conference (NEMC) on August 15th in Bellevue, WA.

Air quality regulations established in the U.S. require systems to remove sulfur dioxide for most coal-fired plants, resulting in Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) wastewaters. These wastewaters may contain significant and highly variable concentrations of toxic metals, especially selenium, resulting in analytical challenges due to unpredictable interferences.

Dr. Burrows will outline the development of this innovative testing method, utilizing aerosol dilution, discrete sampling, and interference removal via collision cell technology, which provides a straightforward, yet rugged approach to the analysis of this complex matrix. TestAmerica assisted the EPA in developing this method and now has it commercially available.

Dr. Burrows is an active member of the U.S. EPA’s Federal Advisory Committee, the Environmental Laboratory Advisory Board (ELAB), and also participates in method and technique development with the American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL). Dr. Burrows’ method development work has brought new insights to method detection limits (MDLs), quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), environmental reference materials, and volatile and semi-volatile organic compound methods in the industry.
