Garden Grove, CA

Last month, a jury in San Diego awarded a man $2.4 million dollars after they reached a verdict against a company that manufactured asbestos containing materials used by the U.S. Navy. The plaintiff had been exposed to these materials during his decade of service working in boiler rooms for the Navy back in the 1960s and early 1970s.

In 2010 the man was diagnosed with mesothelioma. Exposure to airborne asbestos fibers increases the risks of developing diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “It is estimated that currently about 125 million people in the world are exposed to asbestos at the workplace. According to WHO estimates, more than 107,000 people die each year from asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis resulting from occupational exposures. One in every three deaths from occupational cancer is estimated to be caused by asbestos. In addition, it is estimated that several thousands of deaths can be attributed annually to exposure to asbestos in the living environment.”

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber mined from the Earth. In the past it was regularly added to building products to increase strength and corrosion resistance as well as to provide insulation and fire resistance. The use of asbestos was banned from most products in the United States in the 1980s, but many older materials still remain.

Today the removal and disposal of asbestos is highly regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution if asbestos regulations are not followed. During abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized causing human exposure.
