New Beijing base strengthens GE X-ray’s global vision, commitment to Chinese healthcare and innovation

BEIJING, CHINA - GE Healthcare today announced the transition of the GE X-ray leadership team to new global headquarters in Beijing, China. By moving strategic leadership to a new global hub of healthcare innovation, GE X-ray is better positioned to understand and meet the needs of high growth markets, support the Chinese Government’s Primary Care initiative, and enable an entire in-country X-ray business cycle from engineering and development to sales and service.

GE X-ray is a foundational, global imaging business now based in Beijing, with executives on three continents. Benefiting from continued contact with customers and engineers, the global GE X-ray team will grow its capabilities and continue to develop advanced products that can support healthcare settings in rural and urban China, and beyond.

“As a global business, we are focused on driving X-Ray beyond traditional boundaries to deliver unique solutions to our customers,” said Anne LeGrand, vice president and general manager of X-ray for GE Healthcare. “Moving GE X-Ray’s global headquarters to China will help make the business more nimble and responsive while continuing to strengthen our local focus and grow our global footprint.”

Growing Commitment to China

Today’s announcement follows several recent events that build upon a strong, century-long relationship between China and GE.

• In late 2010, GE CEO Jeff Immelt announced a $2 billion USD investment in China, including $500 million USD for six new Customer Innovation Centers. GE X-ray is helping lead this innovation effort, hiring over 65 new engineers and supporting staff at a new facility in Chengdu. GE X-ray’s presence in China – including the advanced Chengdu Customer Innovation Center – will exceed 200 research and development professionals across China.

• Also in 2010, GE Healthcare committed to deploying 500 team members into rural China to assist grassroots medical institutions.

• In early 2011, GE Healthcare launched a three-year “Spring Wind” initiative – dedicated to assisting the Chinese government’s primary care efforts and aligned with the GE healthymagination vision of better healthcare for more people. The “Spring Wind” initiative focuses on developing high quality, affordable healthcare products, improving the medical distribution network across China, and offering premium services and training for Chinese healthcare professionals.

“By aiding the government’s already robust nationwide primary care efforts, GE is committing to help improve healthcare quality and access in both urban and rural China,” said Rachel Duan, president and CEO of GE Healthcare China. “These efforts – along with the healthymagination-validated products including Ling Long digital X-ray and Starlight analog X-ray products already developed and currently produced and sold in China – represent the GE healthymagination vision, and re-emphasize the shared journey between China and GE toward common goals.”

GE’s “In Country for Country” (ICFC) strategy in China invests in local capabilities and resources to develop healthcare solutions that may help spur medical reform and improve health conditions across China. The GE X-Ray leadership team will continue to support this ICFC strategy in an effort to deliver unique and clinically relevant healthcare solutions – including most recently the ICFC Ling Long digital X-ray – to customers in China and around the world.

Across the globe, GE is also rolling out innovative advanced applications like Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography, a tool that uses the absorption characteristics of contrast agents to help visualize contrast uptake of lesions.
