Rockwell Collins unveils touch-control flight displays to enable natural, eyes-forward operation

WEBWIRE

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Rockwell Collins today unveiled the industry’s first touch-control primary flight displays for business jets and turboprop aircraft, which will be available on future applications of the company’s Pro Line Fusion® avionics system. The announcement was made today at the 59th Annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture in Oshkosh.

This week, EAA AirVenture attendees can experience the new touch-control displays, as well as other innovative features of Pro Line Fusion, at the company’s pavilion located near the Rockwell Collins Exhibit Hanger C.

“These displays demonstrate our focus on empowering pilots with natural head-up, eyes-forward interfaces,” said Colin Mahoney, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Rockwell Collins. “Touch-controlled, icon-based controls on the main displays help keep pilots’ attention focused up and forward for safer and more efficient flying.”

Mahoney further illustrated the ease and simplicity of the displays. “For example, when programming the flight management system, instead of entering information on a console-mounted keypad, pilots can redirect to a graphically displayed waypoint or destination with a single swipe of a finger.” Other simple gestures directly on a map display would control panning and zoom features.

Another benefit of the new displays is a streamlined learning cycle for pilots transitioning to a new aircraft type, enabled by the user-friendly, icon-based graphical user interface.

The touch-control flight displays complement the growing list of Rockwell Collins’ innovative solutions for business aircraft flight operations, including:

Head-up synthetic vision – an industry first that enhances safety

Rockwell Collins head-up guidance (HGS) synthetic vision solutions, including its recently announced HGS™-3500 for light- to mid-size business aircraft, keep the pilot’s eyes forward and out the window for greater precision during critical phases of flight. A recent study by the Flight Safety Foundation concluded that HGS technology would have likely prevented 69 percent of all commercial takeoff and landing accidents.

Autonomous backup provides one-touch emergency control

Leveraging its unmanned aerial vehicle technology, Rockwell Collins is developing the first ever one-touch autonomous backup control for business aircraft. If a pilot identifies a loss of situational awareness, one touch of a button affords extra time to recover by putting the aircraft into a safe-altitude holding pattern away from terrain until the pilot disenages the system. The same technology recognizes engine loss and will automatically provide on-screen guidance cues for the best glide path to the nearest airport.

MultiScanTM radar provides comprehensive weather detection and analysis

Rockwell Collins’ award-winning MultiScan Threat Detection System is a fully automatic, hands-free airborne radar system. MultiScan provides optimal clutter-free weather information that reduces pilot workload and enhances safety and passenger comfort by minimizing unexpected turbulence encounters. When MultiScan is displayed with strategic datalink weather, Pro Line Fusion enables the most comprehensive, user-friendly weather picture available.

Globally networked capability with Ascend™

Fully synchronized with Rockwell Collins Ascend™ Flight Information Solutions, Pro Line Fusion-equipped aircraft stay connected to a global network that allows individual owner-operators and corporate flight departments to manage their aircraft operations more smoothly and effectively. For example, operators can save time by entering all flight plan, performance and weight and balance information remotely and send it to the aircraft using WiFi or cellular communications.
