New functions load and convert MSDSplus data into JAMP AIS format; streamline registration and reporting workflows

TOKYO -- OKI has upgraded its “COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R”, an information system used to track chemical substances occurring in products and to ensure compliance with the RoHS directive(*1) and REACH regulations(*2). The changes make COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R compatible with the JAMP MSDSplus format, an industry-standard survey format recommended by JAMP(*3). The upgraded COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R also features new functions for loading data in JAMP MSDSplus format and converting data into JAMP AIS format. The new functions streamline chemical substance information registration and reporting. The upgraded product will be available starting today for the Japanese market.

Taking effect in 2007, the REACH regulations mandate the registration and disclosure of information on chemical substances occurring in products exported to the EU. The REACH regulations cover some 30,000 substance types, and compliance requires companies to control chemical substance information ever more rigorously. This, in turn, requires efficient, thorough communication of information on chemical substances among all companies throughout the supply chain, from companies upstream, including materials manufacturers and chemical preparation companies, to midstream companies, including molded product manufacturers and parts manufacturers, to downstream companies producing the final products.

“The JAMP MSDSplus format supported by the upgraded OKI’s COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R is used for chemical substance information transmission sheets prepared by materials manufacturers and chemical preparation companies. COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R loads data from chemical substance information sheets (JAMP MSDSplus) provided by materials manufacturers and chemical preparation companies and converts it into documents (JAMP AIS) that provide information on chemical substances found in products at the molding stage,” says Sei Yano, Senior Vice President, responsible for Solutions and Services at OKI “This allows efficient use of material master data, based on an exclusive COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R function to manage the materials used in items processed in-house. COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R dramatically improves management efficiency for materials occurring in in-house-processed products (molded products) and helps improve information communication within the supply chain.”

Additionally, when materials manufacturers and chemical preparation companies update survey data, COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R automatically recalculates the amounts of chemical substances in in-house-processed products (molded products). This eases the process of performing the reviews and reexaminations made necessary by the addition of new target substances as part of frequent revisions in applicable regulations.

Moving forward, OKI will continue to support corporate environmental risk management efforts by providing the system.

Glossary
• *1 :RoHS Directive
Adopted in July 2006 by the European Union, the RoHS Directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in computers, communications equipment, home appliances, and other electrical/electronic products. (RoHS stands for “Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment.”)
• *2 :REACH Regulations
Enacted in June 2007 by the European Union, the REACH Regulations require manufacturers and importers of chemical substances to register and evaluate the chemical substances that they manufacture or import. For substances of very high concern, the REACH Regulations also mandate prior authorization from the proper authorities. The use of substances associated with even higher risk is restricted. REACH stands for “Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.”
• *3 :JAMP (Joint Article Management Promotion-consortium)
JAMP was established in September 2006 as an initiative to promote practical, effective mechanisms for the smooth disclosure and dissemination of information concerning chemical substances and other materials across the supply chain, based on suitable information management.
