Atlanta legal nurse consultant, Buddenhagen, attended “Finding Voice in the Writing of Fiction,” at Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) on March 26, 2011.

Kay is a noted Georgia author of many books including “To Dance with the White Dog,” “After Eli,” which was made into a movie, and most recently “Bogmeadow’s Wish.”

About the workshop:

Kay offered that “finding voice is critical for the success of any story.” The purpose of the course was “first, to identify what voice means to each student, and second, to review ways to create the desired effect of voice.”

Starting out the full day, six hour session, Kay talked about his beginnings in writing. He said that growing up in Hart and Franklin counties; he had no writing classes in primary or high school, and consequently, had no writing fear of writing to contend with. He also did not have high expectations for writing successfully.

Of the many ways to create voice, Kay prioritized rhythm, dialogue, and repetition of phrasing. He later stressed the importance of verbs.

Kay shared that he believes the original “Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain to be the best book for high school students to learn writing from. He very much frowned on any rewriting of that novel.

“The magic of Terry Kay’s class lies in his ability to keep the room spell bound for the entire day, without anyone noticing the passage of time,” said Buddenhagen. “His teaching style is educational, effective, and engaging.”
