Knauf Insulation Celebrates Sustainable Success At Ecobuild

Knauf Insulation has been recognised for its environmental efforts by the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) at Ecobuild. [ http://www.knaufinsulation.co.uk ] The company received praise for its sustainable stand design at the exhibition, reaching the final shortlist in the closely contested UK-GBC Sustainable Stand Awards.

The competition rewards exhibitors who have taken steps to reduce the environmental impact of appearing at the show and considers elements such as energy efficiency, carbon reduction and elimination of harmful substances.

Knauf Insulation’s impressive double tier stand was built with the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle firmly in mind – many of the models on display were taken from existing exhibition resources and all of the structural materials will be used in other projects. All of the lighting sources used low energy bulbs and all timber boards were sourced from an FSC certified supplier. Literature was printed using vegetable based ink, on recycled and sustainable paper.

The use of Augmented Reality on the stand helped reduce the need for the traditional printed brochures. Multiple, three dimensional, animated images of Knauf Insulation solutions were generated on screen by the visitor from a single sheet of printed card. Augmented reality has equipped Knauf Insulation with a robust and sustainable method of demonstrating their product.

The sustainability efforts continued beneath visitors’ feet, as the base of the stand was made from recycled polypropylene (plastic), which will be returned to the manufacturer after the show and ground into pellets, to be used in its next production run. Similarly, the vinyl floor covering and carpet will be retrieved by the manufacturer, processed back into a granulated polymer and reused within the plastics industry.

Finally, the products on display have excellent eco-credentials in their own right. All of Knauf Insulation’s rock and mineral wool products are manufactured using ECOSE® Technology, a formaldehyde-free binder derived from bio-based materials, instead of traditional petro-based chemicals, which reduces embodied energy and delivers superior environmental sustainability.

Lydia Sharples, head of communications at Knauf Insulation, said: “We are enormously pleased to have received this recognition for our work to reduce the environmental impact of our stand. Sustainability is a key concern for us and we are determined to carry those efforts into all areas of our work, including attendance at events such as this.”

Paul King, CEO of UKGBC said: “It’s important that exhibitors walk the talk and Knauf Insulation clearly put a lot of thought into the sustainability of their stand at Ecobuild this year. It reflects a desire to make sustainability a priority throughout all that they do.”
