Fourth Delivery to Portland Calls for 21 S70 Light Rail Vehicles.

Sacramento, Ca., May 11, 2006, Siemens Transportation Systems (STS) just announced that Portland’s Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) awarded STS an order to build 21 light rail vehicles with an option for 3 more, expanding TriMet’s total line of Siemens rail vehicles to 126. The contract, won in a competitive bid, is worth approximately $75 million. The S70, a new vehicle type for Portland, will be designed and manufactured at STS’ expanded light rail plant in Sacramento, CA and the delivery of the first car is projected for 2008.

“STS worked with the City of Portland for over ten years to make transportation more efficient and convenient for its citizens,” stated Oliver Hauck, STS President and CEO. “Our customers trust us to provide innovative and reliable light rail vehicles that represent the best in public transportation.”

The 21 additional S70 light rail vehicles will join TriMet’s fleet of STS’ SD 660s, the first 70% low-floor vehicle in North America before Siemens designed and marketed the S70. The S70, Siemens’ highly successful 70% low-floor light rail vehicle, boasts a more modern, streamlined appearance and features room for over 180 passengers, of which 76 are seated. The vehicle also has provisions for interior bike racks and accommodations for wheelchairs. While the vehicles are designed to travel up to speeds of 65 mph, it will be operated at 55 mph. The S70 is currently in operation in Houston (18 cars) and San Diego (11 cars), with an upcoming delivery of 16 cars in Charlotte, NC.
