Volunteers Needed for San Diego Hospice Haircuts @ Home Program

San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine’s unique volunteer programs help to provide comfort and dignity to patients, and can improve their self-esteem, such as through its Haircuts @ Home Program.

“Getting a haircut makes me feel rejuvenated,” says Ruth Sigal, a San Diego Hospice patient.

San Diego patients living with a serious illness are often unable to leave their home to enjoy this valuable service. To assist with this need, volunteers for San Diego Hospice’s Haircuts @ Home program visit patients at their residence, skilled nursing facility, hospital or long-term care facility and provide them with a haircut or new hair style. San Diego Hospice volunteers play a vital role in a patient’s hospice care team.

“It’s fulfilling to know that I can make such a big difference by doing something as simple as giving a great haircut,” said Rhys, owner of two salons in San Diego and a Haircuts @ Home volunteer for the past five years.

However, as more San Diego Hospice patients are being cared for each day throughout the county, more volunteers are needed to meet the demand. Haircuts @ Home is asking for additional licensed hairdressers, stylists and barbers to volunteer their skills and talents to this rewarding program.

Haircuts @ Home volunteers appreciate the minimal, and flexible, time commitment of this volunteer opportunity. “I can work around my busy days and sign up for as many or as few patient visits as my schedule allows,” says Karin Seltmann, a San Diego stylist and Haircuts @ Home volunteer for the past 17 years.
