Deadly Bacteria Found on Bedbugs

LA Testing provides analytical services that utilize advanced laboratory techniques to identify MRSA and bedbug infestations.

Over the past few years numerous media reports of a growing bedbug infestation problem have appeared across the United States. To add to the story, just last month it was reported that Canadian scientists have discovered Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on bedbugs. An article discussing MRSA and bedbugs was also just published in the June 2011 issue of Emerging Infectious Disease, a CDC public health journal.

The initial research, based on the case in Canada, was conducted after doctors at a hospital noticed an increase in both bedbugs and MRSA infections. Although the study was small, it raised concerns that the bedbugs, which can cause people to scratch bites from the bugs, could be introducing the potentially deadly MRSA bacteria into people’s bodies.

The insects have even been found in everything from fancy hotels to apartment buildings and individual homes. Bedbugs are from the Cimicidae family of insects. They feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, including humans, often while they sleep. Adult bedbugs grow to a size of 4 to 5 millimeters. Due to their size they are difficult to identify and their tolerance for various environmental conditions makes them difficult to eradicate. Identification techniques in the field have typically relied on visual inspections, and in some cases, through the use of dogs trained to smell their presence. Unfortunately both of these techniques are prone to false positive and false negative conclusions.

“These latest reports about MRSA being found on bedbugs is a major new development,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, a leading environmental testing laboratory. “Fortunately there are rapid testing services for both the insects and the bacteria to help identify and thus prevent additional outbreaks,” he continued.

LA Testing and their parent company, EMSL Analytical, have cosponsored an educational video on MRSA to help inform the public. It can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf1Zn3t-A5U
