Trust-based customer-supplier relationship spurs worldwide growth.

Award ceremony in Paris on 9 May 2006

Wednesday - May 10, 2006, Leverkusen – Each year, PPG Industries, one of the world’s largest coatings producers, presents the “Excellent Supplier Award” to selected suppliers in Europe and the United States. Among the European award-winners for 2005 is Bayer MaterialScience AG, which supplies PPG with Bisphenol A (BPA), among other products. Award criteria include product quality, supply reliability, documentation, innovation, customer support, continuous improvement and participation in PPG’s “Supplier Added Value Effort” ($AVE) program. An IT company was the only company other than Bayer MaterialScience to meet the stringent requirements in 2005.

Bayer MaterialScience and PPG have a long history of business contacts via the Coatings, Adhesives and Sealants Business Unit, and the Polycarbonates Business Unit has been supplying PPG with BPA since 2003. Raymond Berger, responsible for worldwide product management of BPA: “As a global company, Bayer MaterialScience can ensure highest reliable supply in addition to the requisite product quality. In the case of PPG, we even adapted our logistics to their requirements. Our goal is to be a reliable partner for our customers, supporting their positive development in the global market. This year marks the first time that we are receiving PPG’s Excellent Supplier Award for BPA, and this both validates our efforts and motivates us for the future.” “We began supplying a European PPG site with BPA around three years ago,” adds Bertrand Mondy, Key Account Manager for PPG in Europe. “This was followed by additional plants in Europe and the USA. Such rapid growth in business is only possible with mutual, trust-based cooperation and consideration of the needs of the other.”

This sentiment was echoed by Charles E. Bunch, Chairman and CEO of PPG Industries: “PPG purchases six billion US dollars worth of products and services worldwide each year. We rely on our suppliers as an important strategic tool for satisfying the current and future requirements of our own customers. Each year we notice a handful of suppliers whose services exceed our very stringent requirements, and honor these companies with our highest accolade, the Excellent Supplier Award.”

PPG Industries, established in the USA in 1883 under the name Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co., is a global supplier of coatings, glass, fiberglass and chemicals, with coatings accounting for more than half of total sales in 2005.
