Rottenstein Law Group Launches New Web Site to Inform the Public of the Possible Dangers of the Drug Topamax

WEBWIRE

(New York, NY, June 9, 2011) The Rottenstein Law Group, which is now evaluating potential claims of those individuals who have suffered injury as a result of taking the anticonvulsant drug Topamax, has launched a new Web site to keep the public informed about the potential dangers of this drug, and to educate those who have experienced adverse side effects as to their legal options.

Topamax is the brand name for the drug topiramate, an anticonvulsant which has been prescribed, either alone or in combination with other drugs, to combat seizures brought on by epilepsy and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. Topamax has also been prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches.

Topamax was first developed by Ortho-McNeil Neurologies and Noramco, both subsidiaries of Johnson & Johnson. The drug received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the treatment of seizures in 1996, and for migraine treatment in 2004. Over the last ten years, Topamax has also been studied for use in treating conditions such as bipolar disorder, bulimia, alcoholism and weight gain brought on by use of anti-depressants, despite the fact that it has only been FDA approved to treat two ailments.

Recently, statistics have revealed that Topamax appears to cause an increase in suicidal tendencies and might lead to serious birth defects in unborn babies, according to a Drug Safety Communication issued by the FDA on March 4, 2011. The FDA document illustrates that data have shown that babies born to mothers taking Topamax are 20 times more likely to be born with birth defects, most likely a cleft lip or a cleft palate. This risk is increased when combined with evidence that Topamax may also decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, thereby giving a woman an increased chance of unintentionally becoming pregnant while taking the drug.

The Rottenstein Law Group is advising anyone who has been prescribed Topamax, and suffered from any adverse side effects, including harm to a newborn infant, to visit the firm’s Topamax Birth Defects Lawsuit Information Center to obtain more details about this alarming situation. The site is equipped with easy-to-use social media features that enable users to spread the word about the dangers of Topamax on sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
