In the May issue of The Synergist an article entitled, “Beyond LEED – Pre- and Post-Occupancy Evaluations for Buildings”, discusses how a major government defense agency has built hundreds of thousands of feet of space utilizing LEED principles. The article spotlights the agency’s approach to evaluating a new indoor environment before occupancy and six to twelve months after occupancy.

One of the primary tools used by the agency and discussed in the article is the Mycometer®-test for surface and airborne fungal biomass. It includes two testing methods, both developed by research mycologists at the University of Copenhagen in collaboration with building science experts. They include:

• Mycometer®-surface is a multipurpose analytical tool for testing surfaces and bulk materials for mold contamination on-site. The aim of the test is to provide a method to quantify the level of mold on different building materials and surfaces as well as inside porous materials (bulk samples). The Mycometer®-surface method provides validated criteria for documenting and delineating the amount of fungal biomass on a surface.

• Mycometer®-air is a versatile analytical tool for quantifying airborne fungal biomass on-site. The aim of the method is to provide a rapid, repeatable method for professionals to use when making critical decisions during assessment or post remediation. The Mycometer®-air method provides unprecedented reliability and speed over current methods along with objective, validated criteria for documenting and delineating the amount of fungal biomass in the air.

“Established in 1993, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and their LEED® Green Building Rating System has become the leading tool used to rate and certify both new and existing buildings across the globe,” reported Lisa Rogers, President of Mycometer, Inc. (USA). “At Mycometer we are proud to be providing LEED and indoor air quality (IAQ) professionals with these important tools to help them ensure buildings are safe for current and future occupants,” she continued.
