Duct Cleaners under Scrutiny from the Media
Last week WOWT in Omaha, Nebraska reported on the investigation of a duct cleaning company that was offering an $80 air duct cleaning promotion. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) had concerns and utilized an employee’s home to take the company up on its offer.
According to the WOWT report, a technician from the company arrived at the home that had been outfitted with cameras from the investigative reporters. The technician reportedly told the homeowners shortly after arriving that mold was very apparent and that to eradicate it would cost $1,414.
This report is just the latest in a series that have occurred during the past year that have cast a shadow on the important work that duct cleaning professionals provide for thousands of homes and businesses across the nation. Unfortunately, it only takes the mistakes of a few to put an entire industry under the spotlight.
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) has been working hard to ensure that the public is well informed about duct cleaning. They have made available a number of checklists and guides to selecting a duct cleaning contractor and also provide residential consumer FAQs. In addition, their members follow a strong Code of Ethics to ensure consumers are getting quality services.
“Duct cleaning professionals provide important services that help ensure the indoor air quality (IAQ) of our homes, schools and offices. For the thousands of professional firms that provide duct cleaning services it is important that they also have the right insurance coverage to protect themselves in this market,” reported Brian Mcfarland, Vice President from Legends Environmental Insurance, a leading provider of professional duct cleaning insurance coverage. “They need to be concerned with coverage for microbiological decontamination activities, professional liability for indoor air quality assessments along with commercial general liability and contractors’ pollution liability,” he continued.
