Garden Grove, CA

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. This list includes carbon tetrachloride, a chemical element that is a colorless liquid with a sweet smell.

Carbon tetrachloride does not occur naturally in the environment. It is a manmade chemical that is also called carbon chloride, methane tetrachloride, perchloromethane, tetrachloroethane, or benziform. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR), “Carbon tetrachloride is most often found in the air as a colorless gas. It is not flammable and does not dissolve in water very easily. It was used in the production of refrigeration fluid and propellants for aerosol cans, as a pesticide, as a cleaning fluid and degreasing agent, in fire extinguishers, and in spot removers. Because of its harmful effects, these uses are now banned and it is only used in some industrial applications.”

“People can be exposed to carbon tetrachloride by breathing or ingesting contaminated air, water or soils or having dermal contact,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, a leading environmental testing laboratory. “Exposure to carbon tetrachloride can cause liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that carbon tetrachloride is possibly carcinogenic to humans, whereas the EPA has determined that carbon tetrachloride is a probable human carcinogen,” he continued.

LA Testing provides environmental and Reference Exposure Level (REL) testing services for this potentially harmful chemical. To learn more about Proposition 65 testing services please visit www.LATesting.com, email info@LATesting.com or call (800) 755-1794.
