Wonderland, the Frank Wildhorn Broadway musical update on the classic story of Alice in Wonderland, has posted its closing notice. The multi-million dollar musical will play its final performance on May 15, 2011, having played only 31 previews and 33 regular performances at the Marquis Theatre.

Wonderland began performances on March 21 and opened on April 17, starring Janet Dacal as a modern-day Alice, all grown up and living in Queens. Also featured in the cast are Darren Ritchie, Kate Shindle, Karen Mason, Jose Llana, E. Cornelious Clayton, Carly Rose Sonenclar, Danny Stiles and Edward Staudenmayer.

Wonderland features music by Wildhorn, lyrics by Jack Murphy and a book by Gregory Boyd (also the show’s director) and Murphy. It received its world premiere at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, Florida, in December 2009, and then played the Alley Theatre in Houston (where Boyd is the artistic director) in January 2010 before plans were made for a Broadway transfer.

Wonderland failed to be nominated for any of the season’s coveted theatrical awards.
