Hydromantis To Provide Consulting Services To Halifax Water For Biosolids Stabilization

WEBWIRE

(Hamilton, ON Canada) May 9, 2011 – Hydromantis Environmental Software Solutions, Inc. (HESSI), announced today that it has been retained by Halifax Water, Canada’s first regulated water, wastewater and storm-water utility, to provide a third-party evaluation of the biosolids stabilization process used by Halifax Water. Biosolids are produced by processing the solids left over from wastewater treatment. Effective use of biosolids is a crucial aspect of municipal wastewater treatment operations.

Residual wastewater solids from Halifax Water’s treatment facilities are stabilized by the patented N-Viro alkaline stabilization process. Public concerns over odours following use of a mixture of the biosolids and compost as a top-dressing resulted in a self-imposed moratorium by Halifax Regional Council on use of the biosolids on Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) property as a soil amendment until the independent review was completed.

The Hydromantis team is also charged with reviewing other potential technologies that Halifax Water might consider for biosolids stabilization and to identify the benefits and impacts to the environment and human health from biosolids application to soils. Additionally, the Project Team will respond to questions raised by some members of the public with respect to the N-Viro process in Halifax, and to the use of biosolids as a soil amendment in general.

The evaluation is being led by HESSI’s Senior Consultant Hugh Monteith, collaborating with colleagues Dr. Mel Webber, an independent soils consultant, and Joe Stephenson, former President of Hydromantis, Inc. Together, the three experts have over 100 years of professional experience, dating back to the 1970s as colleagues at Environment Canada’s Wastewater Technology Centre.
