Rock Stars May Not Always Make Good Music Teachers

In an old Bob Dylan song he says: “The Times They Are a-Changin’” and surely that must be so. Recently iPad app maker, ‘On The Path’, will be releasing a new iPad app that claims to allow students of various instruments to learn directly from Grammy award winning artists such as Jackson Browne and Ravi Shankar according to their latest release at Other artists like James Taylor have also recently made the move to the online instruction world.

Griff Hamlin, founder of Blues Guitar Unleashed, has now posted an article at as a means of helping would-be musicians to think clearly when choosing online lessons.

Being able to study music from artists such as Jackson Browne, Ravi Shankar, Leland Sklar, Roscoe Beck, Luis Conte, Scott Tenant, and many others is certainly enticing. However, as Griff points out: “Being a rock star and being a good musician are not mutually inclusive. In other words, just because you’re a rock star doesn’t mean you can play well… and it certainly doesn’t mean you can teach.”

According to Griff and other comments on the post, there are plenty of upsides to this new wave of technology and its ability to bring these types of musicians into your home, or at least into your iPad. As Griff says: “having the ability to slow down the videos and record yourself… these are all great things. It’s just that if the people actually providing the instruction are not doing their job, the rest of it won’t matter at all. I just want people to be careful and choose wisely.”
