Camp Erin San Diego Offers a Unique Summer Experience for Grieving Children

WEBWIRE

For the past three years, local San Diego youth coping with loss have been able to find support and comfort at Camp Erin San Diego, a special weekend camp created and funded by The Moyer Foundation and hosted by The Center for Grief Care and Education at San Diego Hospice.

“Sometimes kids don’t know anyone else who has had a loss,” said Jacqui Small, a Camp Erin San Diego volunteer for the past two years. “The opportunity for campers at Camp Erin San Diego to interact with others who are experiencing similar types of loss and feelings is priceless.”

The annual weekend summer camp is open to children ages 6 to 17 who have been impacted by a death. The camp is free and combines traditional, high-energy, camp activities with grief support and education. This year’s Camp Erin San Diego will be held June 10-12 in Julian, CA.

“Camp Erin provides a safe and fun environment for kids who have experienced a loss,” said Noreen Carrington, Director of The Center for Grief Care and Education. “We are pleased to be the San Diego sponsor for this national campaign in support of all kids grieving a loss.”

Camp Erin San Diego is part of the largest national network of bereavement camps in the country established by The Moyer Foundation, non-profit organization founded by World Series champion and MLB All-Star Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen. The Foundation’s mission is to help children in distress.

Camp Erin San Diego is now accepting applications for campers and volunteers for the June 2011 camp. More information is available at sdhospice.org/camperin or by contacting Camp Coordinator Katie Maxfield at (619) 278-6371.
