Writing Improvement Network (WIN) Announces 2006 Fall Writing Conference:
Proposals Now Being Accepted; Keynote and Speaker Details Finalized

Plans are being made for the 2006 Fall Writing Conference. This year’s theme is “Building Bridges Across the Curriculum,” inspired by Lester Laminack’s soon-to-be released book Building Bridges Across the Curriculum with Picture Books and Read Aloud. Dr. Laminack will provide the keynote address for the opening session Thursday, November 2. Former South Carolina Governor and Secretary of Education Richard Riley will present the Exemplary Writing Program awards at Thursday’s luncheon. Following the awards ceremony, Cassandra King, author of The Sunday Wife and The Same Sweet Girls, will share her thoughts with the audience. Katie Wood Ray, author of The Writing Workshop: Working Through the Hard Parts (And They¹re All Hard Parts) and What We Know By Heart: How to Develop Curriculum for Your Writing Workshop will provide a pre-conference workshop from 3:00-5:00 Wednesday, November 1. Speakers for Friday’s general session and luncheon will be announced at a later date.

The DEADLINE for submitting a proposal is June 2, 2006. All proposals must be submitted along with a completed Proposal Form to WIN Fall Writing Conference, University of South Carolina, Wardlaw 240, Columbia, SC 29208. The conference proposal form is available at WIN’s Web site (www.winsc.org).

WIN-Learning Effects Scoring Academies

WIN and Learning Effects, a company from Portland, Maine, will conduct a scoring academy June 19-22 at E. L. Wright Middle School in Richland 2. The academy includes online scoring of student compositions and professional development workshops designed to address weaknesses evidenced in student responses. Teachers will learn valuable instructional strategies to use with their students when they begin school in August.
