Microsoft ISA Server Offers Secure Remote Host Access for PASSPORT Terminal Emulation

WEBWIRE

Microsoft® Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 offers the ability to allow terminal emulation sessions to access host systems using TCP port 80 instead of TCP port 23. Also, internal and external users can be restricted as to which internal or external resources they can access. By incorporating TN3270, TN5250, VT100, VT220 and SCO ANSI host access through an ISA Server, organizations running PASSPORT WEB TO HOST™ can use TCP port 80 for both HTTP and Telnet traffic. PASSPORT WEB TO HOST terminal emulation software provides browser-based host access to IBM zSeries (3270), IBM iSeries (5250) and UNIX (Telnet) host systems.

Benefits

There are two technical benefits to running PASSPORT WEB TO HOST terminal emulation software through an ISA Server.

TCP Port Redirection – Many corporate security policies only allow network traffic through firewalls on TCP port 80. The ISA server can be configured to allow Telnet traffic over TCP port 80 and then redirect the Telnet data to TCP port 23. PASSPORT WEB TO HOST terminal emulation sessions can now be established using TCP port 80 without compromising security.
Increased Security – By using ISA Server, network managers can restrict which users have access to terminal emulation sessions. Restrictions can be placed on external users accessing internal resources, and also restrictions can be placed on internal users accessing external resources. These resources include the mainframe host system and/or the PASSPORT WEB TO HOST server.
