Rottenstein Law Group Beginning to Evaluate Claims Related to Failing DePuy Pinnacle Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement System

(April 4, 2011, New York, NY) The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from the failures of defective hip replacement devices manufactured and sold by DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, is now evaluating cases of those who were implanted with a DePuy Pinnacle device.
The Pinnacle is a metal-on-metal hip replacement device in which the ball, stem and shell are made almost entirely of metal. These systems are commonly used in younger patients, due to their supposed durability and longer life-span. They are designed to last longer before a revision surgery is required. In the case of the DePuy Pinnacle, there is evidence suggesting the same fate as patients who were implanted with the recalled ASR systems.
The main problem with the Pinnacle system, as with the recalled ASR systems, is that its components loosen, causing patients to experience swelling, along with pain in the hip, thigh, and groin area when walking and engaging in normal activity. There have even been cases where patients cannot put any weight on the hip at all. A less visible problem, though, occurs when these metal-on-metal implants begin to deteriorate. They will start depositing microscopic bits of metal into a patient’s tissues and bloodstream, which can lead to the formation of lesions and pseudotumors. There is the possibility that those implanted with a Pinnacle device could be poisoned without even knowing it.
