Homes in West of Denver Face Soot Contamination from Raging Wildfires

EMSL Analytical offers testing solutions for all types of properties following fires that create smoke and soot damage.

Denver, CO

The foothills west of Denver witnessed three wildfires just yesterday. The fires forced the evacuation of 320 homes. The largest of the fires has already consumed over 700 acres and threatened 750 homes.

The large Indian Gulch fire broke out in tough terrain west of Golden, Colorado. Because the area has limited access it has been a struggle to battle the blaze over the rough terrain that is extremely dry. Gusting winds are adding to the difficulties.

These wildfires can produce an enormous amount of smoke. This smoke is filled with combustion by-products that include soot, ash and char. Once the fires are extinguished, area residents will be allowed to return to inspect their homes and businesses. For many families and businesses, whose properties were saved from the devastating fires, they may now face issues from smoke residue.

Smoke infiltration into buildings can have damaging effects to both property and human health and often requires proof of damages for insurance claims. Odors, discoloration and “ghosting” effects can result when carbon black and combustion byproducts (carbonized material) are deposited on building surfaces and belongings. Testing can help provide information that can be used to help determine the amount of damage and the scope of the smoke remediation services that will be required.

EMSL Analytical, a leading provider of smoke damage testing service, has a laboratory in the Denver area on alert to help area residents. “Our Denver laboratory is ready to help people affected by these wildfires return to life as normal as quickly as possible,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL has the expertise and advanced instrumentation required to perform complex smoke damage and soot testing services.”
