LA Testing provides hazardous waste, VOC and heavy metal testing services to help with the redevelopment of contaminated properties.

Garden Grove, CA

In the California city of Santa Clarita there is a 996 acre piece of land that developers would like give a new lease on life to with new construction. The problem is the property has been found to be contaminated with various toxic substances.

For decades the land was the site of various manufacturing plants that included everything from the manufacturing of dynamite and fireworks to ammunition and detonators. This use has left the property with a host of contamination issues.

According to a fact sheet from July 2010 and released by California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), “During the environmental investigations, data was collected to aid in the design of cleanup strategies for contaminated soil and groundwater on the site. Perchlorate, metals (including antimony, lead, arsenic, barium, cadmium, and copper), poly-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), were found in soil. Depleted uranium (DU) was found in an area of OU3 where a firing range was once located.”

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of environmental and hazardous waste testing services, provides comprehensive testing solutions for these types of projects. “The host of heavy metals and dangerous contaminants that have been found at the parcel of land in Santa Clarita shows that major remediation work is necessary at the site before people and families can live or work there,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Exposure to some of the contaminants can cause everything from organ damage and birth defects to cancers and even death. Environmental monitoring of the air, soil and water in the affected area will help ensure cleanup workers are safe and eventually that the property is ready for new construction.”
