Government, Private Sector and Academic Leaders to Discuss Disaster Response Coordination

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., May 1, 2006 – What would happen in the event of a terrorist attack using a “dirty bomb” or an outbreak of the Avian flu in our nation’s capitol?

R. Halsey Wise, President and CEO of Intergraph Corporation and distinguished members of the government, business and academic communities will discuss that question at the National Homeland Defense Foundation’s (NHDF) Homeland Discussion Series “Who Does What: Pandemic and WMD Attack on Washington” on May 1 at Georgetown University.

Mr. Wise will be part of an assembly of industry experts representing the private sector, academia and the media invited to participate because of their expertise in disaster response and emergency management.

Panel members will include Admiral Timothy J. Keating, USN, Commander, NORAD-USNORTHCOM; Lieutenant General H. Steven Blum, Chief, National Guard Bureau; George W. Foresman, Undersecretary of Homeland Security; and Paul McHale, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense. The discussion will be moderated by General Ralph E. “Ed” Eberhart USAF (Ret.).

Intergraph’s advanced geospatial imaging and public safety solutions were instrumental in supporting the NHDF and federal, state and local agencies in response to hurricane Katrina and other hurricanes that swept the Southeastern United States in 2004 and 2005. In addition, the company is a global leader in spatial information management (SIM) software solutions that form the backbone for critical infrastructure protection systems safeguarding health care, power, water, communications and transportation systems worldwide.
“Intergraph has extensive experience with geospatial analysis of health issues and planning for attacks by weapons of mass destruction,” said Wise. “Our solutions help to capture, share, filter and sort the myriad data resulting from such catastrophes and empower leaders and first responders with a common operational picture that speeds and improves the decision-making process. It is a great privilege to be asked to provide input into the planning and coordination process for such critical issues to our national security.”

Intergraph’s Command and Control software is often the foundational technology for the security systems of high-value assets and critical infrastructure in the Global Public Safety, Government and Transportation industries. As the core technology for these security systems, Intergraph’s software links incident command, spatial awareness, intelligent video, employee identification and multiple sensors into a single system and integrates with local, state and federal levels of government to create interoperable, multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional security networks. Through the integration of these systems, Intergraph delivers a much needed common operational picture to the intelligence and first-responder communities that enable a faster and more accurate response to threats on high-value assets and critical infrastructure.

Such “data fusion” technology is actively being used in response planning and simulation of weapons of mass destruction attacks. The Naval District Washington used Intergraph’s decision support system in the Crystal Breakers 2000 exercise, a live emergency response exercise focusing on WMD attacks in Washington, D.C. This system was used by The Naval District Washington to respond to the September 11th terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Intergraph also worked with the U.S. Army Warfighter Protection Lab to develop training simulations for responding to a radiological bomb. These simulation exercises are used at the Center for Domestic Preparedness and multiple military installations to plan their response to WMD attacks.
