US Bank to deploy Lucent’s Resilient Packet Ring card to connect operations in five cities enabling fast, secure transmission of data between locations

MAY 01, 2006, MINNEAPOLIS AND MURRAY HILL, N.J. — U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) today announced it has selected products, services and software from Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) for an advanced optical network that will connect U.S. Bank operations in five cities spanning the east and west coasts enabling fast and secure data transactions.

Under the three-year agreement, U.S. Bancorp will deploy the Lucent Metropolis® DMX portfolio of metro optical networking products and VitalSuite® Integrated Network Controller software, to create a high-capacity, fully redundant carrier grade backbone network. The network also will include the first deployment of Lucent’s standards-based Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) card, which enables service providers to double the amount of bandwidth on their network by using both sides of rings for transporting traffic. The RPR card also supports fast restoration of packet traffic in the event of a network failure, offering exceptional reliability.

Lucent Worldwide Services will supply a wide range of professional services including engineering, network integration, testing, and program management.

“As one of the primary providers of next-generation SONET technology, Lucent’s well-established expertise in the delivery of SONET and Ethernet services gives us the confidence that we will have the secure, high-bandwidth communications system we need in today’s banking environment,” said David Grabski, senior vice president network services group for U.S. Bank. “Together, Lucent’s Metropolis® DMX and VitalSuite® INC network software offer an efficient, scaleable, reliable and technologically-advanced network, while at the same time decreasing capital and operational costs.”

“The Lucent solution will enable U.S. Bank to cost-effectively meet its current metro-area access needs while providing a solid foundation to accommodate future bandwidth and service growth,” said John Cafaro, enterprise sales leader for Lucent Technologies. “Enterprises such as U.S. Bank can now easily migrate from costly overlay networks to a single data-aware packet network that less expensive and easier to manage.”

With over 12,000 units already deployed, the Metropolis® DMX portfolio is being used by more than 100 customers worldwide to address the challenge they face in their metropolitan networks. The Metropolis® DMX family includes the DMX Access Multiplexer for central office and large enterprise applications, DMXtend, for enterprise and loop access applications, and DMXplore to deliver next-generation SONET services economically right to the customer’s premises. All provide compatible next-generation SONET functionality and serve as integrated Ethernet over SONET metro platforms. When used together, the products in the portfolio create an end-to-end solution that allows carriers to offer faster, more sophisticated services while lowering operating costs.
