Children’s bounce houses have long been a common sight at birthday parties and other social gatherings. Few parents likely knew that some of these bounce houses also contained high levels of lead.

Last month, two leading manufacturers of children’s bounce houses agreed to strictly limit the lead in their products. The announcement followed a lawsuit filed by California’s Attorney General and the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, California. The lawsuit is against thirteen bounce house manufacturers and two companies that produce the vinyl used to make the products.

The two manufacturers have agreed to limit the amount of lead to 100 parts per million which is lower than the federal limit of 300 parts per million. Researchers from the Center for Environmental Health had previously found levels up to 120 times the new limit using x-ray fluorescence and lead wipe tests.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Lead poisoning is one of the most serious environmental health threats to children in the United States. Elevated blood lead levels can retard young children’s mental and physical development.”

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical, is a leading provider of lead and other heavy metal testing services. “The announcement from the two manufacturers is good news for families,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Children playing in bounce houses with high levels of lead could be exposed through inhalation, ingestion or by absorbing the lead through their skin. Lead is of special concern when dealing with small children and pregnant women as they are more susceptible to health problems due to exposure. LA Testing can help manufacturers and the general public through precise lead testing procedures at their state of the art laboratory facilities.”
