GOMA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, – “I am in Goma, DRC, where I am meeting survivors of sexual violence. The physical and psychological effects on children of this abhorrent crime cannot be overestimated. Sexual violence also undermines the fabric of society, reinforcing a vicious cycle of violence that is the enemy of all peace and progress.

The Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights’ report on Remedies and Reparations for Victims of Sexual Violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a valuable contribution to helping end these crimes and UNICEF applauds its timely release.

We all must do more to protect children from these horrendous acts. Sexual violence is a despicable crime for which there can be no impunity; its perpetrators must be prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
