Ottawa, ON – The Olympic Philately, Numismatic and Memorabilia Commission of the International Olympic Committee has just awarded Canada Post with the ‘Prix Olympia 2010’ gold medal for the stamp issued at the occasion of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, in Beijing 2008.

“Over 100 countries issued stamps for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and we are extremely proud that our stamp was awarded the Prix Olympia gold medal,” said Mary Traversy, Senior vice-president, Transaction Mail, Canada Post.

The Honourable Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Transport) said, “I congratulate Canada Post and the stamp design team for winning this prestigious award. It is a testament to the high quality of the stamps Canada Post produces and the recognition they receive around the world.”

Canada Post was honoured with a silver medal for its 2006 Torino Olympic stamp and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic stamps are being considered for awards by the International Olympic Committee.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic stamp, designed by Karen Henricks of Toronto’s q30 design inc., was issued on July 18, 2008 and featured an abstract image of an athlete with hands overhead carrying a flag. It captures the spirit of competitive sport and the pride of the Olympic tradition.
