Are You Being Exposed to Dangerous Levels of Carbon Monoxide?

Last month three people attending an event at an indoor skating rink in Exeter, New Hampshire had to be treated at a nearby hospital after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning. Firefighters who visited the facility the following morning confirmed that there were still high levels of carbon monoxide in the building the day after.

Also in January, two men died in their apartment in Austin, Texas after being exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide from an old gas heater that was not properly ventilated. The men had carbon monoxide poisoning ratios of 44 and 48%.

The same month in Tempe, Arizona, firefighters responded to a manufacturing plant to treat a worker who was believed to be suffering from a heart attack. It was quickly discovered that he had suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by the exhaust from two forklifts. Tempe firefighters recorded carbon monoxide levels of 190 parts per million, far above the 30 parts per million threshold they use to determine if breathing apparatus is necessary before entering a building.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection agency (EPA), “Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Because it is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic fumes, CO can kill you before you detect its presence. At lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue. The effects of CO exposure can vary greatly from person to person depending on age, overall health and the concentration and length of exposure.”
