Nokia Siemens Networks to provide LTE radio network and services for implementation and care

SK Telecom, Korea’s number one mobile operator in terms of subscribers, will triple its broadband capacity and provide five times faster data download and seven times faster upload speeds from July 2011. The operator has selected Nokia Siemens Networks to provide Long Term Evolution (LTE) infrastructure, using its Flexi Multiradio Base Stations and NetAct network management system as well as implementation and care services. LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, a radio technology that is an evolution from existing 3G services, bringing higher mobile broadband data speeds and faster response times.

The operator will introduce LTE services in Seoul in July 2011 and expand its LTE network to other metropolitan areas by the end of 2012. Nationwide coverage is expected by the end of 2013.

Under the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its award-winning Flexi Multiradio Base Station, a perfect fit for SK Telecom’s advanced Smart Cloud Access Network (SCAN)* concept due to its unique modular and distributed design.

“SK Telecom has aggressive plans to deploy LTE in Korea. We will draw on our expertise in LTE as well as the experience gained from several LTE trials and implementations to help the operator put these into action,” said Ricky Corker, head, APAC region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “With our portfolio of world-class products, software and services, we aim to ensure a smooth and timely launch of LTE services in the country"

Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide its NetAct system to help the operator efficiently monitor, manage and optimize its network. Moreover, it will also provide a full set of hardware and software maintenance services along with strong local support to help ensure the best network availability.

Customers, press and analysts are welcome to view industry-leading LTE solutions at the Mobile World Congress in the Nokia Siemens Networks’ Experience Center in Hall 8, C01.

According to SK Telecom, SCAN is a highly effective cloud-based network deployment method especially optimized for wireless communication as multiple RRUs (Remote Radio Units) can be installed according to varying network capacity needs of each area.

LTE
Nokia Siemens Networks is leading the commercialization of Long Term Evolution (LTE) in terms of commercial references and live network performance according to a third party consultancy firm. LTE is the next-generation mobile broadband technology and the evolutionary step from GSM, WCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, CDMA and WiMAX networks. It delivers the best broadband user experience and smart device services in an efficient way due to increased data rates, reduced latency and scalable flat all-IP network architecture. Nokia Siemens Networks has shipped its LTE ready Flexi Multiradio Base Station to over 200 operators. In addition, it was the first to make an LTE call using commercial hardware and standards-compliant software in 2009.

Nokia Siemens Networks is leading the commercialization of LTE in terms of commercial references and live network performance verified by an independent company*. Among the company’s 31 commercial LTE deals are Agri-Valley Communications in USA; Deutsche Telekom in Germany; Elisa Finland and Elisa Estonia; LG U+ in South Korea; LightSquared in USA; Mobily (Etisalat) in Saudi Arabia; Mosaic Telecom in USA; NTT DOCOMO in Japan; Tele2 in Sweden; Telecom Italia; Telenor Denmark; Telia in Sweden, TeliaSonera in Denmark and EMT (TeliaSonera) in Estonia; Verizon in USA and Zain Bahrain.

* The LTE performance in a live network in Sweden was measured by Signals Research Group, an independent consultancy company. The part supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks achieved the highest performance ratings.

Nokia Siemens Networks is running LTE trials with over 25 operators across the globe including KPN in the Netherlands; Telecom Italia; Telstra and Optus in Australia; O2 in Germany; MegaFon in Russia; SFR in France and Vodacom in South Africa.

An LTE performance drive test by Signals Research Group on a Swedish commercial live LTE network confirmed that the overall results achieved in the Gothenburg network (supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks) were better than those achieved in the Stockholm network (supplied by another vendor). For more information about the performance of Nokia Siemens Networks’ LTE offering, please refer to an independent report from Signals Research called ’Signals Ahead LTE Drive Test Revisited - Part 1’, which is available here or on the Nokia Siemens Networks internet page.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ Single RAN including the Flexi Multiradio Base Station provides a future-proof, easy and cost-efficient path to LTE in both FDD and TDD spectrum bands via a simple software upgrade. Besides the Single RAN that supports GSM, 3G, FDD-LTE and TD-LTE, the company’s LTE telecom infrastructure offering also features the Evolved Packet Core, including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway), transport solutions, network management system, Self Organizing Networks (SON), the award-winning Voice over LTE (VoLTE), provisioning and charging solutions and a range of professional services to plan, install, maintain and operate networks.
