Partnership delivers environmental and commercial benefits

The HSBC Climate Partnership is currently celebrating the continuing achievements of its pioneering programme tasked with creating long-term environmental and commercial value. The five-year collaboration between HSBC, The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and WWF has been working to reduce the impact of climate change on people, forests, freshwater and cities, and to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon policies.

The HSBC Climate Partnership Review brings these achievements together, illustrating how and where the partnership has delivered real and tangible outcomes within the areas of scientific research, pilot projects, clean technology and government policy.

Speaking at the launch of the HSBC Climate Partnership Review 2010 at Canary Wharf, Simon Martin, Head of Group Corporate Sustainability said, "Solutions to climate change require collective action involving governments, NGOs, the public and the business community. The scale of the achievements announced today by the HSBC Climate Partnership shows that tangible results can be achieved by going beyond corporate sponsorship and adopting a more collaborative approach.

“HSBC has seen direct commercial benefits from the Climate Partnership through a number of initiatives implemented by our employees. To date more than 100,000 colleagues have actively taken part in the Climate Partnership, creating a more engaged workforce.”

Simon Martin continued: “As focus remains on the economic crisis, businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the financial benefits of operating sustainably and tapping into the low carbon economy. Corporate partnerships with environmental organisations are an important part of this process.”
