Blackburn with Darwen Council confirmed yesterday that they are to cut 1000 jobs over the coming months, equating to approximately one quarter of their workforce.

Further to this, Manchester City Council have announced 2000 redundancies across their offices to meet the £109 million of savings to be made over the next financial year.

“This level of redundancies will undoubtedly have a significant effect across our region. Redundancy packages are calculated in relation to age and the length of time an employee has worked for the Council. These packages may also include enhanced redundancy pay or ex-gratia payments, however in some cases, people may find themselves without a job and with little or no pay out.

“In some cases, Councils may also utilise compromise agreements where disputes regarding redundancy selection and consultation occur or to fast-track the redundancy process and the termination of the employee’s employment. A compromise agreement is a legally binding agreement that sets out the terms upon which an employee’s contract with their employer is to be terminated Employees are required to seek advice from a qualified employment law solicitor or expert before signing a compromise agreement. The cost of seeking legal advice in relation to compromise agreements is usually fully, or at least partially, funded by the employer.”
