FSAN Progresses Next-Generation Optical Access Network Technologies at Tokyo 2011 Event Hosted by OKI and OFN


TOKYO -- OKI and OFN, an OKI subsidiary specializing in providing next generation broadband network solutions, hosted the quarterly meeting of the FSAN (Full Service Access Network) Group, a global consortium of over 80 leading telecommunications service providers, testing labs and equipment manufacturers. The event took place during January 25-28, 2011 in Tokyo, Japan.

Addressing the capacity demands that bandwidth-intensive applications are expected to generate in the access network, the meeting focused on the interoperability of the recently standardized 10 Gbps (XG-PON1) technology, which will significantly expand current communication capacities. Moreover, the FSAN Group is now focusing its studies on a future generation of access equipment named NG-PON2. This new technology, targeted for standardization in 2012-2013 and commercial deployment in 2015, will expand the access fiber capacity to at least 40 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream. This will pave the way for provisioning even higher bandwidth services of the future. The event resulted in significant progress in these areas.

The Tokyo meeting allowed FSAN to take the first steps toward XG-PON1 interoperability and to define Operator requirements for longer term generations of fiber access systems that can offer services in the Gbps per user range. In particular, FSAN began preparation for the first XG-PON1 Interoperability Test Event, to be held in 2H11. Moreover, the Group further refined the FSAN Operator White Paper on NG-PON2 requirements.

Among the topics discussed in Tokyo were the technologies for the development of new optical transceivers for NG-PON2. Power consumption was another important topic discussed, because energy efficiency is a key requirement for NG-PON2.

The FSAN Tokyo 2011 is a milestone of next generation optical access networks and services. The interoperability test of XG-PON1 will positively demonstrate practical usage of equipments among multi-venders along the XG-PON standard.

I also believe that full XG-PON1 interoperability in a multi-vendor context will be achieved quickly, thanks to the experience gained by FSAN in the 12 GPON Interoperability Test Events held to date,” said Paolo Solina of Telecom Italia, Chair of the FSAN Optical Access Network Working Group.
