Magazine and Website Offer Tools, Inspiration With Fitness 101(TM) Challenge

Berkeley, CA, 02/03/2005 -- LowCarb Living, the magazine of smart choices for healthy living, introduced a year-long fitness challenge to its readers and website visitors in its January/February 2005 issue now on newsstands. The Fitness 101™ Challenge is a year-long series of articles that “inform, motivate, and inspire” readers to make a commitment to getting fit in 2005. In addition to the series, the website offers a free suite of tools to help participants track their progress against their goals. As a culmination of their year-long commitment, LowCarb Living is inspiring Fitness 101™ challengers to train for a local community fund raiser such as a walk/run in the fall.

“While we believe controlling the amount and type of carbs you eat is important, we also know that making physical activity an important part of your lifestyle is just as essential,” said Catherine LaCroix, editor-in-chief. “For the next 12 months, we’re offering to be ’partners in fitness’ with our readers. The print series and web tools are designed to help them get from where they are now -- whether that’s on the couch or frequent workouts -- to wherever they want to be.”

The first installment focuses on setting realistic goals, behavior modification and an assessment of where readers are relative to their physical activity. The website (www.lclmag.com) hosts the suite of tools that readers can use free-of-charge to track their progress. The Fitness 101 Tools™ include:

An Exercise Log: To track the type and duration of exercise sessions, including distance, reps and free-form note area to include with the entry. Over 25 different types of exercise are pre-programmed into the application.

A Food Journal: To record food intake to track meal plans. Flexible and comprehensive, in addition to recording each meal, get more details as time of day, and nutrient values. Includes the ability to “save” and re-use frequent meal plans and a handy Nutrition Finder to calculate the calories, carbs, protein, and fat consumed at each meal.

Weight Tracker: To track weight loss progress. It features a simple calendar-like tool so readers can quickly assess their progress and make adjustments as necessary.

Goal Setting: To record fitness goals; up to 5 “mini” goals and one “macro” goal at any one time. Goals can be marked “achieved” as readers accomplish them.

“These tools make it easy for readers to use because we pre-programmed a lot of the data they would typically have to enter,” said Andrea Mondello, Website editor. “There are no other tools like this that allow users to quickly update their progress by just pointing and clicking.”
