VDSL2 upgrades bring 25 Mbps Internet speeds to subscribers in over one hundred communities

PETALUMA, CA — —Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced that TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®), the nation’s eighth-largest wireline communication service provider, is upgrading its widely deployed infrastructure of Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platforms (MSAPs) in twenty states to bring advanced broadband services to its residential and business subscribers. Targeting 25 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 5 Mbps upstream today and even faster speeds in the future, TDS is utilizing all-Ethernet very high-speed digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) technology to enable voice, high-speed data, and in some areas video services to over one hundred communities. This initiative, which was recently rolled out to customers in Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin, will be expanding to thirteen more states in the first quarter of 2011, reaching subscribers across hundreds of nodes embedded in nearly 150 networks.

“TDS is excited to be able to offer a significantly enhanced broadband experience to subscribers across a wide swath of our footprint,” said Ken Paker, vice president of network services at TDS. “The ability to grow and scale our network to meet the emerging demands of our broadband subscribers is exactly why we first invested in the Calix C7 and the Calix Unified Access portfolio nearly seven years ago. Our deployment schedule has been very aggressive for this broad initiative. Calix has been a great partner in helping us to transform our networks and meet our objectives.”

A Calix customer since 2004, TDS has deployed the Calix Unified Access portfolio widely across its thirty state footprint. In fact, some of the C7s being upgraded as a part of this initiative were among the first deployed in 2004. Now, through a software upgrade and card change, these same platforms are transforming from basic POTS and ATM-based ADSL services to advanced Ethernet-based VDSL2 services. TDS has also deployed a variety of other Calix platforms and solutions, including the all-Ethernet-based E-Series, the P-Series optical network terminals (ONTs), and the Calix Management System (CMS). This Calix Unified Access portfolio allows TDS to match the “right” solution to each deployment scenario, and to deliver services ranging from traditional copper-based legacy services to advanced fiber-based Ethernet IPTV services.

“We congratulate TDS in bringing advanced broadband services to over one hundred communities across the United States,” said John Colvin, vice president of field operations at Calix. “We are proud of the role we have played in this transformational initiative, and look forward to working with TDS to continue to ensure that their subscribers reap the benefits of their flexible and high capacity broadband access network infrastructure.”
