Rottenstein Law Group Now Evaluating Poligrip Lawsuits

Since denture creams are classified as Class I medical devices by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), manufacturers are not required to list their products’ ingredients on packaging. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the manufacturer of Poligrip products, was including zinc in the composition of its denture creams, in order to reduce odor and aid in adhesion. Zinc is an essential mineral necessary for normal bodily function, but excessive amounts absorbed by the body can lead to the purging of too much copper, which is necessary to maintain healthy brain and nervous system function. This can lead to disorders affecting the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord (neuropathy). Zinc poisoning is one of the causes of neuropathy, which can lead to permanent disability and even death.
When studies linking excessive zinc to neuropathy were published, GSK placed warning inserts inside Poligrip packaging, then eventually discontinued its line of denture creams containing zinc altogether. GSK’s actions will prevent harm from coming to new consumers, but they won’t remedy the harm already inflicted on consumers who used Poligrip containing zinc.
