EMSL Analytical Receives Radioactive Materials License

The nation’s leading asbestos testing laboratory now offers services to analyze radioactive asbestos samples.

EMSL Analytical is pleased to announce that they are now accepting samples for polarized light microscopy (PLM) for radioactive asbestos samples. The laboratory recently secured their Radioactive Materials License that allows the laboratory to possess these types of samples.

Asbestos containing materials were widely used during the last century across the United States. These materials were found in everything from insulation and flooring to sound damping materials and fire resistant coatings. Asbestos containing materials were used in everything from single family homes and multi-tenant buildings to factories, ships and facilities that housed radioactive materials.

As facilities that contained radioactive materials, such as nuclear power plants and nuclear powered naval vessels are remediated to remove hazardous asbestos containing materials, their potential radioactive state has made them a challenge to have analyzed. With the new Radioactive Material License at EMSL Analytical that is no longer the case.

“It has been shown from countless scientific studies that breathing asbestos fibers can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma and respiratory diseases,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL. “In the past getting these types of samples analyzed has been a challenge for asbestos and environmental professionals. This new service is great news for the industry since exposure to airborne asbestos fibers increases the risks of developing these deadly diseases.”
